PERU RECORD FIRST WIN IN QUALIFIERS

Peru have recorded their first win in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers amongst the South American teams after the 2-1 victory over hosts Ecuador in Quito. The Peruvians had started theirQatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers without a win in the first five games until the Ecuador match on Tuesday night.

After a goalless affair at the EstadioRodrigo Paz Delgado in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, Peru took the lead through Christian Cuevas in the 63rd minute before Luis Advincula wrapped up the win for the visitors with one minute left to play. Ecuador pulled one back three minutes into added time courtesy Gonzalo Plata but it was just mere consolation for the hosts who have now lost their last two games in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup next year.

Ecuador started with a defeat to Argentina on matchday one before three successive wins against Uruguay, Bolivia and Colombia. Their three-match winning run in the qualifiers ended with a 2-0 defeat against hosts Brazil last week Friday.

The defeat to Peru makes it two straight defeats for Ecuador who don’t play again in the qualifiers until September. Ecuador will resume their qualifiers with  an home game against Paraguay on September 2.

Peru recorded a very good win over Ecuador away from home but it was not enough to take them off the foot of the table in the South American section of the World Cup qualifiers after hosts Venezuela battled to a point against Uruguay in Caracas. The Uruguayans have now drawn their last two games in the qualifiers without scoring any goal.

At the top of the table, Brazil have a six-point lead over Argentina in second place following their 2-0 away win over previously unbeaten Paraguay thanks to goals from Neymar and Lucas Paqueta either side of the interval. Argentina lost a two-goal lead established inside eight minutes through Cristian Romero and Leandro Paredes to draw 2-2 with hosts Colombia. Luis Muriel (penalty) and Miguel Borja were the scorers for the Colombians. The equaliser from Borja came four minutes into injury time. Argentina have now drawn their last two games in the qualifiers.
